BIG SELF-PORTRAITS

4 day workshop

Adult 18+
(Teens are invited to register)


Students will create a dramatic, finished and larger-than-life self-portrait on 40” x 60” parchment paper or a large piece of cardboard, building a portrait image in a step-by-step process from a photograph, from a line drawing in graphite, to a limited palette in acrylic using Burnt Umber and white paint in washes of value, and utilizing both Classical and contemporary methodology and practice.

    Participants will consider related art history and aesthetics, from the Classical painter Caravaggio to contemporary artist Shepard Fairey, as well as both traditional and modernist techniques of image-making.

    This course is open to both Teens and Adults, and is open to both the novice or experienced artist.  This course meets for two-and-a-half hours a day for four mornings across one week, 9:30 am to 12 noon on Tuesday through Friday.


    Students should bring the following materials 

    available at https://www.nantucketcreate.com/ 


    • a graphite drawing pencil (e.g. an Ebony Pencil or Flat Sketching Pencil);
    • an eraser (e.g. a white Prismacolor “Magic Rub Eraser” or similar);
    • a 24-sheet pad of 9” by 12” plain white drawing paper (e.g. Strathmore Series 400 Off-White Drawing Paper or similar);
    • an iPhone or Smartphone with a camera and website capabilities.  

    Students will have the option to continue working independently in the studio outside of class.


    Students should also bring a water-bottle or similar beverage and a mid-morning snack.  

    All other materials will be supplied by the instructor.
