Creating Comics
Sequential Art for Youth and Teens

Explore the fascinating world of comics, the history, and the basic techniques! From Sunday comic strips and funnies, to modern day superhero designs, graphic novels, and Japanese manga, this course is for the young cartoonist and jam packed with sequential art of all kinds. We will use pen and ink wash as well as water soluble paints. This course is accessible to all skill levels as well as beginners. Create your own comics in this three-week course! Bring your ideas!


Discover Nantucket:
A Field Photography Course

Note: Youth may register as a companion to a registered adult.
An evening photographing Nantucket’s scenic landscape and sites. We will meet at NISDA campus then depart for a location determined by weather and instructor. An overview of basic photographic principles and mechanics will be discussed, and description of the site included. Time will be maximized for photographing with a focus on methods and challenges to create photographs that are both unique to the photographer and site chosen. The course is flexible and open to all age groups and levels; from absolute beginner to seasoned pro, or family on vacation. All camera formats and/or devices welcomed, and tripod encouraged but not required.

This course is designed for all skill levels, age groups and families. We will meet at the NISDA campus in Wauwinet. Vehicle is required with ability to walk for stretches of time on-site.


Youth Clay: Hand Building

Enjoy creating with clay! We will develop important basic skills utilizing different hand building methods such as slab work, coil and pinch. These techniques will be applied to larger inventive projects! We will dive into the world of clay and craft for inspiration looking at both traditional and contemporary ceramic artists. Collect ideas from magazines, photos or your own drawings and bring them to class the first day. Bring a sketchbook and don’t forget to wear clay clothes!


Youth/Tween Intermediate
Clay – Wheel Throwing and Hand Building

Session II: Aug 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18 | $525
Wheel throwing and hand building together! Dive into the art and movement of wheel throwing! We will expand our the ideas and techniques of hand building while introducing throwing on the wheel. Learn the different stages of making functional forms, starting with centering the clay and progressing to simple forms such as cylinders and bowls. Learn how to trim, alter and deco- rate your pieces with various glazing techniques! Our inspiration will be historical and contemporary crafts from around the world as well as textures and forms found here on Nantucket. Collect ideas from magazines, photos or your own drawings and bring them to class the first day. Bring a sketchbook and don’t forget to wear clay clothes!

Prerequisite NISDA’s hand building or previous clay experience. Youth with these experiences may apply to enroll and must receive instructor’s approval to join the class.


Youth Arts Open Studio | Jr. NISDA Artists in Residence

Let your creativity run wild and get inspired by scavenging the beaches, woods, and landscape surrounding NISDA to create original artwork. Led by Mark Carapezza, students will have access to NISDA’s materials and tools to bring their imagination into physical reality as “Jr. NISDA Artists in Residence.” Bring sunscreen, snacks, lunch, and water!
