SUMMER 2008 PROGRAMS WILL BE ONLINE SOON!
Youth Workshops offer hands-on artmaking with art history to spark creativity and imagination! Whether you are in Painting, Clay, Photography or Jewelry we will look at what artists create and how artists live and sometimes change history. You may look at their techniques and try them yourself combining them with your own ideas. You will think about inspiration and imagination and the art & crafts made by people around the world and through time.

AUGUST SESSION 2008

July 28 - August 15th

PHOTOGRAPHY & JOURNALING
Monday + Thursday, 9:30am - noon
Ages 8 and up

Engage in the process of self-discovery through the art of photography and journaling. See Nantucket in a whole new way… through the images in your mind and the lens of your camera! Enjoy discovering new points of view, new textures, seeing light and atmosphere. By developing your “art of seeing” you will create photo and word “pictures” that are personal to you. Photos will be processed by Mid-Island Photo between classes. We will talk> about our photos and ideas, and create photo projects incorporating written impressions…a word, a poem or…more. Bring a light jacket, sun hat and camera!

ARTS SAMPLER ... PAINTING, CARTOONING + SCRAPBOOKING
Tuesday + Friday, 9:30am - noon
Ages 8 and up

Feel the excitement of creating! Come enjoy painting, drawing, cartooning and scrapbooking adventure while you learn about color, composition, techniques, tools (from brushes, pencils, magic markers to ink pens)! You will focus on recording what the eye sees…in the Nantucket landscape around NISDA’s Farm…shells, rocks, branches! You will also explore the ideas in your “minds eye“ through creating cartoon characters and story boards, as well as the art of scrapbooking…gathering of your photos, paintings, drawings, collected magazine images, and treasured objects to collage into a memory book about you and Nantucket. We will be inspired by Art History and comic books. You will explore your own unique way of seeing…plus the inner landscape of your own imagination!

JEWELRY MAKING
Tuesday + Friday, 9:30am - noon
Ages 8 and up

Begin projects in class! You’ll want to continue them all week at home or at the beach! Create your own jewelry with fun & simple beading, braiding and sculpting techniques. Using filo, wire, twine, shells, pebbles, beach glass, feathers and your own personal treasures to create a bracelet, anklet, necklace, toe ring or pendant to wear yourself or give as gifts! Whatever your choice…your one-of-a-kind jewelry will be great fun to wear!

INVENTIVE SCULPTURE + MORE!
CLAY HANDBUILDING: FOUND OBJECTS
Monday + Thursday, 9:30am - noon
Ages 8 and up

We will get started right away! We will experiment with slab work, coiling, pinching and digging out using our hands, wire tools and found objects. You will develop important basic skills while creating your personal ideas, mythological creatures, masks, futuristic ideas, za-zoom! comic figures or more traditional classic figures, perhaps beautiful large flowers or seashell sculptures. For inspiration we will look at traditional ceramics, clay folk art from around the world as well as contemporary ceramic artists. You may work with clay, sand and materials found around Nantucket. Collect ideas you like (from magazines etc.) to bring to class. Bring a notebook, as we will keep on getting ideas and making sketches. Remember to wear “clay clothes”!!!!!

WHIRLING CLAY WHEEL

Experience the fun, the good feeling you will have, and the beautiful forms that practicing clay throwing will bring! Learn how to center the clay and progress to create cylinders and bowls. Learn how to trim and decorate your thrown and hand sculpted pieces with various glazing techniques and color! Our inspiration will be historical and contemporary ceramics from around the world, as well as textures and forms found on Nantucket’s landscape. Collect ideas and wear old clothes!
