30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Nantucket is a small island approximately 3.5 miles by 14.5 miles which was formed by the receding glacial waters of the last ice age (14,000 years ago). This remote and beautiful island, once the whaling capitol of the world, is today rich in historical lore and scenic splendor.
Nantucket has over 80 miles of accessible beach with lifeguards at many locations in the summer months. It's beaches are some of the most pristine in the world. North shore beaches are usually more tranquil, while the south shore beaches are more inviting for surfing. In the Harbor, Children's Beach, with park and playground, is in town. Jetties Beach, one of the most popular, part harbor- part ocean, is an easy bike ride from town or you may take the shuttle bus (in season). On the ocean, Beautiful Dionis, sheltered by dunes, is just a three-mile bike ride away. Cisco and Surfside, on the South Shore, are popular with both surfers and families. For walking and quiet relaxation there is always an uncrowded stretch of beach or the rolling moorlands.
