YOUTH ART CLASSES 2012
Ages 8 to 12
Session I July 5–27
Session II July 30–August 17

Youth classes offer hands-on art making with an emphasis on having a great personal adventure exploring both serious and rambunctious ideas while learning studio techniques! This year we have added journaling, cartooning, scrapbooking and textile arts clothes decoration! Lots of fun.

Note: This summer all Youth Studios meet two times per week.
Selected studios may be registered for one day per week or one week.

CLAY HANDBUILDING
Monday, Thursday 9:30-noon

class description
- Colorful representations of our local environment and other images will be our inspiration for creating a personal place setting. While learning how to mold and build with clay, students will construct a handmade plate, bowl and cup to use as their personal dishes and maybe a sculptural centerpiece for your table. Dinner never tasted so good! (Food and dishwasher safe, of course!)
  Remember to wear old clothes.
CLAY WHEEL: Whirling...
Tuesday, Friday 9:30-noon

class description
- Experience the fun, the good feeling you will have, and the beautiful forms that practicing clay throwing will bring! Learn how to center the clay and progress to create cylinders and bowls. Learn how to trim and decorate your thrown and hand sculpted pieces with various glazing techniques and color! Our inspiration will be contemporary ceramics from around the world, as well as textures and forms found on Nantucket’s landscape. Collect ideas and wear old clothes!
  
  Prerequisite: NISDA’s Clay Hand Building or previous wheel experience. Youth with these experiences may apply to enroll and must receive the instructor’s approval to join the class. Developmentally eye-hand coordination and muscular strength is important too!
TEXTILE CRAFTS: Batik, Tie Dye and Stencil!

class description
- Textile design, fiber structure and fiber manipulation as a creative process. Have a fantastic time working with color, cloth and dyes to create beautiful, fun patterns. Learn Shibori (tie-dye and fold dye) techniques from the Far East and Africa. Print and Paint, designs and learn about batik, a resist process from Indonesia. Embellish your cloth with buttons, heads and embroidery… from bandanas, pillows, scarves, T-shirts to textile art for the wall. Remember to wear old clothes.
CREATE! PAINT, DRAW, PRINT!
Tuesday, Friday 9:30–Noon

class description
- Come, enjoy and learn more about drawing, painting and printmaking. Use traditional tools, including brushes and briers and materials including paints, inks, charcoal and creative alternatives. We will focus on what the eye sees from life, both in the studio, around NISDA’s farm and what the mind sees in your inner landscape and imagination. Remember to wear old clothes.
JEWELS FOR YOU!
Wednesday, Friday 9:30–Noon

class description
- Design your own jewelry with fun and simple beading, braiding and sculpting techniques. Using fimo, wire, twine, shells, pebbles, beach glass, feathers and your own personal treasures to create a bracelet, anklet, necklace, toe ring or pendant to wear yourself or give as gifts! We will begin projects in class! You'll want to continue them all week at home or at the beach.

class description
- This summer we’ll create personal expressions of landscape and storytelling through the lens of a camera. Explore the science of how it all works with your digital camera and by making a pinhole camera and producing black and white prints. Discover the art of portraits and Nantucket historical characters such as Maria Mitchell and Maushop, making costumes, props and posing “19th century style” for a 4x5 camera. We’ll go out into the landscape where we’ll take photographic impressions of place and notes on observations to create an album/journal.

Moms, dads, grandparents, kids come enjoy creating together! Make puppets, clay figures of your family, house, dog, cat! Make cup, bowls, tiles, and more! You’ll learn a lot about design plus have the fun of being together making things with your own h ands! Wear old “comfy” clay clothes… and bring a drink and snack too!
