College, Workshops and Studios Information and Pre-Registration Form DISCOVER NANTUCKET: EN PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING class description This week long workshop focuses on the development of personal style and techniques in landscape painting. Thumbnail sketches and color studies will be utilized in the initial stages of setting up a painting. The use of underpainting and mediums for advanced effects will be demonstrated. The class will culminate in a two day sustained study. A wealth of information will be shared. The Nantucket landscape will be our setting for visual exploration. Site trips will range from Altar Rock heathlands, the harbor, hidden forest and with the Trustees of Reservations, Great Point including: the Lighthouse, inner and outer harbor and Coskata Pond. Instructor: Rob Head WATERCOLOR TRANSLUCENCE class description Expand the medium of watercolor using a multi-layering technique. Combine water-based mediums and paints, creating beautiful veils of luminous color, pouring the color and saturating the paper with successive thin washes, then embellishing with the textures of mark-making, the process revealing natural form. Expand your practice in watercolor, acrylic and/or dyes working on heavy 140lb. paper using alternative tools; scrapers, sponges, brushes, soft pastel, oil stick, wax and charcoal. This method can be used by beginners and advanced artists to evolve individual work and ideas developing personal imagery. Note: Schedule may be adjusted to accomodate enrolled class smaller participants. METAL CLAY AND JEWELRY class description Precious metal clay (PMC) is an innovative material that combines the workability of clay with the beautiful finish and durability of precious metals. The material is easy to manipulate and shape by hand to make beads for bracelets, necklaces, and other precious keepsake objects. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to work with this material to create unique places of handmade jewelry and charms that reflect the beauty of Nantucket. TRADITIONAL JAPANESE TIE + DYE class description We will explore the magical combination of the traditional techniques of Japanese Shibori and Indigo dying. We will stitch wrap, fold and clamp the fabric to create wonderful fabrics and textures. Each person will get 2 yards of fabric and 2 silk scarves. The resulting fabrics may be used for scarves, garment, interior decoration and quilts. EACH ARE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT POINTS This is an excellent workshop for teachers. DECORATIVE PATTERNS + PRINTS class description Explore the unique and spontaneous qualities of patterns created by the techniques of nature printing, painting, stamping and stenciling. Traditionally in paper and cloth, you may ultimately apply your personal designs to garments, interior furniture, walls, boxes and objects. As you experiment with these printing techniques you will also develop your sense of design, texture and decorative patterns. Leave with a new vocabulary of personal beautiful, decorative patterns and the technique knowledge to apply them creatively! Instructor: Betsy Sibley HANDMADE BOOKS... BOOK BINDING class description In this class we will use handmade paper, found and ephemeral objects to create handmade books that can store sketches, project ideas or recent memories. Types of bookbinding methods will include hardbound pamphlet, accordion, Japanese... and case-bound structures. Each structure will introduce techniques and materials including bookcloth, bookboard, bone folders and different stitching techniques. EXPRESSIVE MACHINE KNITTING class description Join knitwear designer Charlotte Hess studio exploration of the Art of Machine Knitting concentrating machine technique pattern work and resist felting. Charlotte is celebrated for her organically fluid sculptural knit garments. Fascinating and engaging to knitters and all interested design and the creative process. SCRIMSHAW INSPIRED: CLAY SURFACE AND STORY class description Workshop participants will create a drinking vessel set that explores carving, sgraffito, mishima techniques that become a venue for creating narrative and design features on functional pottery. Learn basic technique, slabs, coil, etc. Experiment with the possibility of form and texture. This experience is designed to stimulate new perspectives in landscape and natural imagery while exploring and documenting a variety of Nantucket environments. Instructor, photographer, naturalist Larry Cronin will impart historical and ecological stories to create a frame of reference for each site and assignment. Explore singular images or envision photographic installations inspired by the island. Travel with us each afternoon as we set out to discover all the great places from Great Point and Coskata, east end Sconset Village, west end Madaket harbor, the historic whaling town, Altar Rock heathlands, Squam Swamp's Hidden Forest to the 'Serengeti' plains. Behold the islands changing light, vast sky, dunes, fresh and salt water ponds, grasslands, marshes, bogs and the Atlantic ocean surf. A personal 35mm camera and/or digital camera is required for this workshop. Digital printing is available at The Camera Shop on island. Those working in 35 mm B/W can schedule lab time in NISDA's classic B/W darkroom, however the focus of this workshop is on shooting and the creative process.
